It’s difficult for a teenager to discover what to pursue after high school, but that is not the case for sophomore Kayla Fong.
Fong started playing soccer at the age of four after growing up with her two athletic brothers.
“Growing up, I would always watch my brothers play sports and would always go to their games on the weekends. I wanted to be just like them, and I was determined to do everything they did and more,” said Fong.
Fong joined Carlmont’s varsity soccer team as a freshman and is currently playing for her club team, De Anza Force.
Fong’s teammate junior Brittany Zelnik said, “As a soccer player, Kayla is amazing. Her traps are incredible and the way she moves around the ball and defenders is one of the most amazing things I’ve ever seen.”
With the passion she has, Fong knows she wants to pursue soccer after high school.
“I realized I wanted to play soccer at the highest level when my club team started traveling out of city, state, and country for tournaments. I love the competitiveness and comradery from playing the game,” said Fong.
As a sophomore, Fong is committed to University of California, Berkeley.
“Cal has always been my first choice. I love the coaching staff and know they will make me a better person on and off the field. I’m so happy Cal has everything I am looking for in a school and that I can continue to play competitive soccer at the highest level,” said Fong.
Not only is Fong an all around person on the field, but also off of it.
“Kayla’s a really great person as a whole. She’s nice, smart, and very athletic. She puts 100 percent effort into everything she does,” said sophomore Jacey Phipps.
Sophomore Kevin Hutchaleelaha said, “Kayla is one of the hardest working people I know. At the same time, she’s also really fun to be around and has a really good personality.”
Even with hours of soccer every day, Fong is able to maintain a 4.2 GPA.
“I’ve played soccer since I was four, so I’m used to managing my time with homework, soccer, and other activities,” said Fong.
Through soccer, Fong has had her grandmother to inspire and support her.
“My grandmother was athletic and got me involved in sports. Now, she really enjoys watching my games, so I play my best for her,” said Fong.
In the future, Fong hopes to play soccer professionally.
Fong said, “I’m so excited to have the opportunity to continue playing soccer in college. I want to play soccer for as long as possible. If soccer turns out to be a career, it would be great. If not, it’s a hobby I will enjoy forever.”
