Cartoon: Out of eggs

The combination of avian influenza and inflation has caused a massive egg shortage in the United States. As Americans revisit dairy isles hoping for price reductions, others have turned to smuggling them across the U.S.-Mexico border. The crisis highlights the unsustainable nature of livestock farming, as widespread euthanization is currently the widespread practice to curb the spread of avian flu in chickens. In such an advanced culture as ours, we should be aware of how much we take for granted and work towards finding reliable alternatives to the shortages of our favorite commodities. (Andrew Shu)
