Passionate teachers are distinguished by their commitment to ensure that their students succeed.
AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) and English teacher Stephen Lucia, clearly fits the description of someone who loves his job and cares for his students.
“I love what I do because education is about making a difference. Whether it be helping someone prepare for the SATs or the college of their desires, it motivates me and keeps me passionate about my job,” said Lucia.
In his teaching, Lucia also sees the importance of literacy and the endless opportunities education can provide for a student.
“Literacy is really important to get a job, and my goal is to show students how you can apply what I teach in the real world for many different opportunities.,” said Lucia.
Showing commitment to learning can be an important factor in motivating students.
Sophomore Erika Marshall said, “I can really see how much Mr. Lucia enjoys his job when he teaches. His passionate attitude towards learning makes me want to strive further in my schoolwork.”
Lucia tries to recognize a students’ needs and help them in any way possible.
“Mr. Lucia is one of the few teachers I have that I know I can always reach out to for help. He is very helpful, and I am very thankful for that,” sophomore Mia Hogan said.
Lucia knows that it is his role to encourage students for an active learning and concern himself with promoting students’ intellectual and moral development.
On a daily basis, Lucia strives to development a student’s knowledge while increasing his own at the same time.
“Education is an intangible thing that no one can ever take away from you. Your car can get taken away, or your house, but never your education which is what really inspired me to become a teacher,” Lucia said.
Lucia’s passion for education clearly shows through in his teaching, where his upbeat attitude has inspired many to pursue further into their academic success.
