On April 4, the Carlmont High School Track and Field team easily ran past the Sequoia High School track and field team.

Guided by overwhelming victories in the boys junior varsity and varsity group, Carlmont easily beat Sequoia in the overall team score, and only failed to get superior points in a couple of the girls varsity events and the shot put events.

“I got a 55 second 400 meter, which was an okay race for me because my fastest official time is a 53 second,” said Sammy Makaafi, a Carlmont freshman who got first place in the junior varsity 400 meter event.

“In the long jump, I jumped 18 feet 1 inch, which is the furthest I’ve ever officially jumped,” said Austin Driver, a sophomore who got first place in the long approach section of the long jump.

This success against other schools has not gone unnoticed, as Michael Bereket, a Carlmont sophomore, was rewarded for his excellent performances against other schools. “I got invited to the CCS Top 8 Meet, which has all of the best athletes from all of the schools in our regions.”

The only stumble encountered by Carlmont was the fact that 30-40 percent of the school’s athletes were injured, with approximately 5-10 percent of these athletes lost for the season.

“When runners fail to build up strength in their muscles and don’t stretch, then one muscle can be stronger than another which causes injuries,” said Daniel Bereket, a Carlmont senior.

“Running is a matter of when you get hurt, not if,” stated Carlmont sophomore Mark Vingralek.

Regardless of these setbacks, there seems to be no other team that can outpace Carlmont High School, which is heavily favored to win the league this season.
