Starting Six was recently booked for this year’s Homecoming dance.
The band makes in-your-face party anthems, a quick Google search will confirm that. The songs are hook-centric and club ready. The beats are uncomplicated but leave room for their boyish charm.
Sophomore Brandon Magpayo said of the Starting Six, “I didn’t really know their music until I heard about our Homecoming dance and everything. I looked them up and listened to their stuff, Homecoming should be pretty crazy this year.”
Endlessly simplistic lyricism aside, the Six know how to cobble together a catchy song. The infuriatingly catchy ‘O.Y.B’ is sure to get the heads of Scots nodding, and humming for weeks thereafter.
‘Thirsty’ and ‘This Ain’t Water (Thirsty pt.2)’ are driving, 808 – heavy numbers, tailor made to get wild to.
However, there are some doubts that the Six care much for artistic fulfillment. Socially-conscious numbers are nowhere to be found on any of the Six’s albums. The albums themselves are mostly filler with a catchy party song or two sprinkled in.
That said, it is important to remember they aren’t indie rap darlings expected to churn out a poignant, dense work every time they release something. They’re just having fun being young and famous, relatively speaking.
The East Bay up-and-comers look to take homecoming to unprecedented levels of excitement on Oct 20.
