For the senior class, “Senior Skip Day” is viewed as less of a privilege and more of a right.
A day they’ve dreamt of for four years now, “Senior Skip Day” is finally approaching. Many seniors are eagerly awaiting this “sacred” day, however, there has been little discussion as to when the elusive “Senior Skip Day” will take place.
“We’ve spent four years together obeying orders and following the rules to get to where we are. I believe that having an official ditch day makes the seniors feel like we’re all in this together and we can all go with our friends and have some ‘end of high school victory’ fun,” said senior Kristen Dames.
Even students with almost spotless attendance are patiently awaiting senior skip day.
“As senior class president, I don’t condone cutting class or skipping school, but I definitely think senior ditch day is a privilege the senior class has. All the teachers and faculty know it will happen eventually and there’s not really much they can do about it,” said senior Tristan Gasperian.
The senior tradition is usually the day following Live 105’s “BFD” music festival at Shoreline Ampitheatre in Mountain View, however, seniors don’t have school that day due to the senior picnic and finals week for underclassmen. Many seniors advocate for a senior skip day, but when it comes to picking a date, there has been little discussion.
“I kind of took it upon myself to find a date that works for all seniors that’s after AP testing and between finals. I suggested it to the senior class just because I’ve seen how stressed everyone has been, myself included, over the past month. I think we need to have fun and let loose for one day,” said Dames.
There are countless amounts of absences amongst the second semester seniors, but what makes this day different than any other? For some, it’s more than just a day to miss school, it’s a right of passage.
“I feel like senior ditch day is more important than any other ditch day since most seniors get together and do something fun as a way to celebrate their last few days of high school. It’s become something seniors have done for years so everyone wants to take advantage of being a senior and not having to worry about missing class,” said senior Alison Fitch.
