The girls varsity tennis team, undefeated this year and No. 1 in the league, dedicated their winning game against San Mateo to their seniors on Oct. 17. This included spotlighting them in their matches, signing posters, and gift bags.
Six cheerful posters lined the fence next to the tennis courts, covered in colorful signatures and inspirational quotes. There was one for each of the six Carlmont seniors on the team, and they all got the opportunity to play. The team is undefeated this year, with an overall score of 16-0 and a conference score of 13-0.
“This is the first time in as long as I can remember we’ve been top in the league,” said coach Margaret Goldsmith.
The depth of this year’s team has also contributed to their success.
“I feel like our team is a lot closer this year versus the past few years,” said Natalie Su, a senior on the team.
Su has been playing tennis for Carlmont for two years and feels that the team’s strength as a whole this year is why they are undefeated.
“The development of the players, a well-rounded team, a good coach, the improvement in their 1-4 singles, and no injuries all contributed to their victory,” said Valerie Khachadourian, a spectator who attended almost every game.
The seniors are also a beneficial part of the team.
“My sister Miyu, in particular, has been reliable and an inspiration to me to always do better,” said sophomore Mia Ikeda.
Leadership is also an important part of the overall team dynamic.
“A lot of hard work and leadership got us to this point,” said junior Chloe Khachadourian, a tennis captain for the team.
Many are confident that these girls will stay undefeated next season.
“I think the team’s hard work and dedication paid off this year and will continue to do so,” said assistant coach Sharon Bologna.
Carlmont won the game with a 4-0 win against San Mateo in the singles and a 2-1 win in the doubles, effectively a 6-1 win overall.
“Every single player brings something to this team, and this year, that has been expressed,” said sophomore Vania Pala.
