Cardenas is a superstore located in the heart of East Palo Alto, very close to Highway 101 for easy access.
The store was named “Mi Pueblo” or “My Home Town,” which matches the store’s comforting atmosphere. The employees were also very welcoming.
The superstore has a restaurant that offers exquisite cuisine, including tacos, sopas, enchiladas, chiles rellenos, and tamales. Accompanying every meal are aguas frescas or “fresh waters.”
Cardenas has something for everyone, from freshly cut meat and cheese to tres leches cakes, which is one of the crown jewels of Mexican culture.
Walking through the aisles, you can’t help but want to try everything. The different smells make your head turn in every direction, and you get a homey sensation. The sense of nostalgia will make you want to come back for more.
Although I did not get to buy all of the different sweetbreads, the one I tried was like eating soft, fluffy clouds. They also offer traditional drinks that go along with it for purchasing.
In the store, you can find the proper ingredients to follow recipes at home. If you are looking for groceries, the vegetable section provides all the greens that you can use to make a healthy meal for the family. There is a wide selection of fresh fruits as well.
There are no words to describe the store. It is essential that people who have not been exposed to this culture before visit places like this. Getting out of your comfort zone will help you learn about different cultures and people, and Cardenas is the perfect place for this.
Mexican culture is known for its food, but visiting Cardenas helped me discover other unique aspects of the cultural world. For instance, in October, they have sugar skulls that you can put on the Día de Los Muertos altar.
Going to Cardenas with friends, family, or even by yourself will make you feel at home, regardless of your background.
I recommend that everyone visit Cardenas if it is nearby.
