The second surprise album Eminem dropped in a row was ultimately a success.
He made a fantastic followup to the album “Kamikaze” with his newest album, “Music To Be Murdered By,” especially after getting a lot of hate on his album “Revival” back in 2017.
This entire album was filled with many chart-topping songs. However, like in any album, not all songs can be number one. A certain amount of songs were standouts because other artists contributed to them in addition to Eminem. He did a great job of bringing in many popular creators into his music. His singles in this album were also quite spectacular.
In “Premonition – Intro,” Eminem remarks how many critics commentated poorly about some of the music he released in comparison to the bigger hits of his career. This shows he pays attention to his audience and their opinions and therefore aims his lyrics very directly at his fanbase.
A particular lyric in “Unaccommodating (feat. Young M.A.)” sparked a bit of controversy: “But I’m contemplating yelling ‘Bombs away’ on the game / Like I’m outside of an Ariana Grande concert waiting.”
People who were related to the ones that died at the Manchester bombing were very displeased with this lyric because they felt as if Eminem was disrespecting those that passed away. Back in 2017, Eminem tweeted out how he wanted people to join him in donating to the Manchester victims. He never meant to offend anyone, but he wanted to call attention to the event again.
Eminem tends to write controversial lyrics in order to spark up conversations even if he does not personally agree with what he is stating. This is his way of bringing attention to issues.
He also does this in “Darkness,” in which he raps from the perspective of the Las Vegas shooter. Eminem does not have any connection to Stephen Paddock (the shooter), but he speaks from his point of view in order to convey the thoughts that may have been going through Paddock’s head.
He brings to light the common political debate in regards to gun control by mentioning the shootings. What makes Eminem such an extraordinary rapper is how deep he goes into the lyrics. Something that sets him apart from many others is the amount of effort he puts into writing the songs that he creates.
This album’s music is highly adored by the public because of its very thought out lyrics in combination with the amazing beats and melodies.
The vocal component in “Darkness” also made the song so much better.
Similarly, the hip-hop style song “I Will (feat. KXNG Crooked, Royce Da 5’9”, Joell Ortiz)” took Eminem’s beats to another level by using them to emphasize certain words. The song “Stepdad” also had the beat reflect the melody of the song, which made it overall pleasant to listen to.
In addition to having pleasant music, Eminem also holds several records in the music industry, some of which were broken in his most recent album.
“Rap God,” which was released back in 2013, used to hold the record for most words per second with 6.46 words per second. But recently, with the song “Godzilla (feat. Juice WRLD),” Eminem beat both the world and his personal record, rapping 7.46 words per second.
Juice WRLD’s presence in the song made it even more popular, considering he died several months prior to its release. Like Eminem, he was also known for his deep lyrics. That is something that helped both of them become a success, further elevating the song.
Other successful songs included “Alfred – Interlude,” and “Alfred – Outro,” which added some spice to his album. They were samplers of music from his past. Eminem is not a new-style rapper, and he reminds his audience of that with these 30-second songs.
In the album, “Those Kinda Nights (feat. Ed Sheeran)” directly follows “Alfred – Interlude” and is significant also for including Ed Sheeran. Though Sheeran does not usually have the most exciting songs, he does an excellent job of helping out Eminem with this song.
Like Ed Sheeren, Royce Da 5’9” and White Gold helped with making the song “You Gon’ Learn” very energetic and rhythmic.
With the release of this album, Eminem is officially back in the musical world and is there to stay. His newest album re-establishes him as the iconic rapper that he always was.
