The glory of Les Miserables hasn’t worn off even more than a month and a half since its release. “Les Mis,” as it is known to its fans, still brings crowds to theaters.
The musical has grossed about $300 million globally, more than four times its production cost. With its outstanding acting and singing, and extraordinary plot, Les Mis is sure to keep viewers hooked until the end.
It has an all-star cast including Hugh Jackman, Anne Hathaway, Russell Crowe, and Amanda Seyfried. The movie is based on a musical adaptation of the book of the same name, by Victor Hugo.
It is about a convict, Jean Valjean, who is paroled after 19 years of being a prisoner. He cannot find a job because he was a convict. He runs away into hiding and starts a new life. The musical is an operetta, almost completely sung, with only a few spoken words.
The musical is filled with great music and songs, including notable numbers such as “I Dreamed a Dream,” “Empty Chairs at Empty Tables,” “On my Own,” and “Castle on a Cloud.” Although not as suspenseful as the original musical, the movie still lived up to expectations and managed to impress many.
Anne Hathaway did a commendable job both acting and singing. On the other hand, Russell Crowe’s singing in the movie was not comparable to the musical. Amanda Seyfried acted well, but her singing was a little weak.
The movie has won four Golden Globes. It is also nominated for eight Academy Awards including Anne Hathaway for best actress in a supporting role and Hugh Jackman for best actor in a leading role. Les Miserables, the musical, has been a favorite for more than 25 years and the movie will continue that legacy.
