In a fierce rematch between Carlmont and Sequoia’s varsity girls lacrosse teams, the Ravens triumphed 18-13 in an away game on March 26. Their first game was a much closer matchup, but the Ravens still came out on top.
The victory brought Sequoia’s league record to 1-3, placing them at No. 5 in the league standings, while Carlmont, also at a 1-3 win and loss record, holds the No. 6 spot.
“We knew that this game would be competitive, and focused on keeping possession and executing our offense effectively while staying solid on defense,” said Ethan Ewing, Sequoia’s head coach.
The game started close with Carlmont leading by one point, but a few minutes into the first quarter, one of Sequoia’s senior captains, Megan Elgaaen, got taken out with an injury.
“We were motivated after Megan got hurt. We played with so much heart and wanted to win it for her,” said Eliza Sharratt, a sophomore Raven.
Sequoia was in the lead at 5-4 at the end of the first quarter. Both teams focused on maintaining possession and creating opportunities. Carlmont did well in challenging Sequoia’s offense while Sequoia used their strong midfield play to maintain control.
“Our team’s chemistry is excellent, and we have strong communication, which has made this season so much fun,” said Ravens freshman Kate Hitch.
Sequoia extended their lead to 10-8 in the second quarter, showing their resilience after a few turnovers early on. The midfielders stepped up, winning crucial draws and maintaining pressure on Carlmont’s defense.
The Ravens extended their lead further to 16-10 by the third quarter, thanks in part to strong communication and defensive adjustments.
“We kept fighting even when we were down. It was all about getting to the next ball and not letting mistakes from earlier affect us,” said Chris Coulter, Carlmont’s head coach.
Carlmont could not mount a comeback in the fourth quarter, and Sequoia’s offense sealed the game with an 18-13 victory.
With the win, Sequoia moved closer to breaking into the top half of the West Bay Athletic League standings, while Carlmont is looking to regroup and bounce back in their next match.
“This rivalry is a lot of fun and exciting to be a part of. We compete hard, but it’s all in good spirit. We’re from the same community, and we can celebrate together after the game. It’s a special experience,” Ewing said.
