With the start of STAR testing, Carlmont students get a feel for a block schedule which goes on during the two week testing period.
Some students work well with having fewer and longer class periods, while others prefer shorter classes.
Researchers have provided evidence in favor of block schedule. Studies have shown that the longer class periods are beneficial to the teacher who can cover more material in the time span as well as spending more time helping the students individually. In turn, students get less homework because there is fewer classes each day.
Carlmont student, Malak El-Khatib, stated why she likes having block schedule during STAR testing week, “I have less homework which means I can spend time with my dog. It’s also nice bringing less binders to school each day.”
Students are forced to stay in one class for a longer period of time. For some, this isn’t a problem, but sitting in the same class for 90 minutes can cause others to become restless and unattentive.
“I dislike block schedule because I have to stay in the same boring class for over an hour,” commented Kristen McCarrick.
