This rated “G” cartoon premiered Feb 17 and was well received by its audiences.
Based on the book “The Borrowers” by Mary Norton this movie could adequately be described as cute.
Arrietty is a tiny adolescent girl who lives with her family of borrowers under the house of an elderly woman and her house keeper Hara.
Shawn, age 12, comes to visit with his great aunt for a little while before he has to leave to get heart surgery.
Shawn’s visit was intended to give him some peace and quiet before his surgery but instead he happens upon the brave and almost fearless Arrietty.
The two worked together to protect Arrietty and her family from the meddlesome house keeper Hara who was determined to capture them and prove to the world that they existed.
Watching the bonds of friendship grow between Shawn and Arrietty over the hour and 35 minutes on theater time was amusing.
Although clearly intended for younger viewers this movie would not be wasted on a high school student who could humor their inner child.
I gave The Secret World of Arrietty three and a half out of five stars but the seven year old covered in popcorn next to me seemed to give it a full five.
This movie is worth while to see with younger siblings or while babysitting but I would not recommend it as a date night or an outing with high school friends.
The Secret World of Arrietty was not a typical Disney movie with a love story and a princess. Instead this Japanese Disney movie featured a story of bravery and a pin needle sword.
