The varsity girls basketball team secured their first victory of this season against Del Mar on Dec. 5. Carlmont scored 35 points and Del Mar trailed with a score of 23.
Within the four minutes of the game, Keta Iongi was hurt. The injury was not serious, so she was able to play for the rest of the game. In the first quarter, Carlmont was losing by three points, but were able to step up their game during the second quarter ending with a score of 21-18. In the third quarter, the lead increased with Carlmont winning with the score of 27-21.
Carlmont and Del Mar were evenly matched with multiple turn overs and numerous fouls on both sides.
Iongi and Anisah Smith were out for the previous games. Although Smith did not play, she was able to cheer the team on.
Sophomore Stephannie Tong Woo said, “We had momentum and Keta was back. We were really pumped up today because it was a home game and all of our players were present.”
Tong Woo believes that Iongi and Smith make a big impact on their team.  Tong Woo added, “They both play hard and are really aggressive. They just add a spark to the team that we didn’t really have last year.”
In addition to having Iongi back, Coach Ron Fontana believes that the girls have stepped up their game by improving their defense.
Fontana said, “It was better than the two previous games, but still not good enough to compete in league. We plan to have harder training.”
The first league game is on Jan. 9 against Capuchino High School. The team hopes for numerous victories through the Peninsula Athletic League  games.
