Carlmont’s Intermediate and Advanced dance classes collaborated this holiday season to produce their own version of the classic Christmas movie Elf.
“At the end of last year, we decided we wanted to do something really awesome for our winter show. Ms. Secrist suggested reworking the movie Elf and we all got super excited,” said Jessie Real.
The dancers arrived at 4 p.m. on Friday after school to set up decorations around the studio, transforming the mirrored room into a winter wonderland with snow, ribbons, and dazzling lights.
“It was like walking into the North Pole,” joked Jenn Stewart. “Not actually, but pretty close.”
After set up, the dancers quickly changed into costume and make up and ran through the show. After adjusting the imported stage lights and fixing the sound balance, the dancers were ready to perform.
They all huddled in the locker room as guests began arriving one by one, until it was officially a full house. People even stood behind the rows of chairs just so that they could experience the magical show, as well.
“I was not expecting that many people to come,” said Britney Lockman. “I was shocked to see people fighting for seats and others sitting and standing on the sides. I got so nervous!”
When it was time to start the show, all the dancers were sentenced to the hallway between the studio and the gym where they all waited anxiously for their turn to perform.
“It was like death waiting out there,” said Real. “We were all so nervous and tired and hyper and not tired and excited and freaked out all at the same time. And we were constantly being shushed which was annoying because how could they expect us to be quiet?”
Each dance was performed with a slice of cheesiness, as the dancers brought out their comical sides.
“It was really funny to see everyone dancing all silly because I’m used to seeing them be all serious when they dance,” said Ruben Mendoza.
After the final number ended with the sparkling of 30 sets of jazz hands, the audience erupted into a simultaneous cheer.
The dancers then enjoyed refreshments and holiday music as they mingled with their friends and family.
“It was a great end to an unexpectedly great night,” said Stewart.
