Loud, fun, and spirited are some of the first words that come to mind when thinking of the Carlmont Drumline. They attend football games and pep rallies to bring liveliness to the school and boost spirit, but their reach extends far beyond Carlmont.
Carlmont Drumline is a student-led club at Carlmont that consists of 11 percussionists from the school, led by their captain, Isaac Grinker. Grinker helps lead and direct Drumline as they learn and choreograph their own songs to bolster and create a fun atmosphere at the events they attend.
“We just want fans to have as much fun as possible. So we’re going to keep playing until everyone gets into the game or whatever we’re performing for,” Grinker said.
That has been Drumline’s goal all along: to provide and create a fun and enjoyable atmosphere at any event they entertain. Drumline member Zachary Robinson backs up Grinker’s thoughts on having the fans have as much fun as possible.
“Drumline is kind of like the hype. We get everybody in the mood and excited for what is happening,” Robinson said.
But to many members, Drumline means much more than just entertainment. It is something that has had a positive impact on their member’s lives, both in and outside of school.
“Anyone in drumline will tell you that it really helps them get involved in school,” Grinker said.
Drumline’s positive effects on its members stem outside of the classroom. It affects their personal lives as well.
“We do a lot of things together as a group; we regularly go get pizza before football games. So we’re kind of this little family, and that’s really nice to have that little tight family in such a big school,” Robinson said.
Drumline is most known for its presence at varsity football games, but it attends and impacts other events across Belmont and San Carlos.
“There are usually two performances that aren’t football games or assemblies. One of those is the Waterdog Run and the Hometown Days Parade,” Grinker said.
Overall, fans in attendance at these events agree that Drumline elevates the overall experience.
“Drumline makes it more exciting and louder for everyone,” said football game crowd member Justin Ji.
