In downtown Burlingame at 1451 Burlingame Avenue, Isobune offers sushi with an interesting twist, the food is served on boats.
When I walked into the restaurant, I saw a waterway occupying the middle of the restaurant. On the water, there were little boats circling around, each carrying sushi on it.
However, if sitting near the water is not your thing, the restaurant has booths on the side.
I started out with some unagi. I really liked the sweet sauce and the unagi, however I suspect that the little tray of unagi had been out floating in the water for a while because the sauce looked a bit dry.
I next tried the salmon, which was really soft and tasted great, however it had the same problem as the unagi did, it was dry on the outside.
I did notice that the chef put out a fresh dish on one of the boats, so I quickly snatched it. This was a shrimp tempura wrapped in seaweed and then covered with rice, with some drizzled unagi sauce on the top. The shrimp tempura was crunchy and the salty flavor of the batter worked really well with the sweet unagi sauce.
Finally, it came time for me to order my favorite sushi dish, the unagi hand roll. The chef took my order and served me one within five minutes. The unagi was not dry and the sweet taste of the unagi sauce with the avocado created a sweet and fresh taste in my mouth. This dish definitely did not disappoint.
The chef’s quickness and friendly manner was also reflected in the service. The waiters were friendly and always made sure my glass of tea and water were full. Whenever I asked for something, they were on it.
The bottom line: The sushi may be a bit dry, but if you want an unique experience, this is the place for you.
