Like so many good things, even the beloved “Maximum Ride” series must come to an end. “Nevermore,” the eighth novel of the “Maximum Ride” series by James Patterson, concludes the story of Maximum and her band of angel-like misfits.
The “Maximum Ride” series began in 2005 with the release of “The Angel Experiment,” which follows the story of a genetically mutated teenager named Maximum. At a secret lab known as The School, scientists performed tests on children in which they spliced their DNA with that of birds, wolves, and other creatures.
Maximum, and a few other teen and child mutants, who all have bird- like wings due to having undergone testing with avian DNA, band together for protection and call themselves the “Flock.”
The young mutants are constantly hunted by a group of half-wolf mutants known as the Erasers that work for the scientists. Throughout the series, the Flock fights graphically intense and sometimes bloody battles with their pursuers, and also attempt to find a place in the world where they can fit in with the normal people they are no longer like.
In “Nevermore,” the journey of Maximum has finally come to an end. The novel answers long- standing questions with the series, and resolves a love triangle between Max and two of her closest mutant comrades. The novel delivers this romance in addition to a healthy amount of violence, comedy, and epic moments.
Overall, “Nevermore” truly ends James Patterson’s fantastic series with a thunderous bang.
