One of the most prestigious award shows of the year, the Oscars, airs at 4 p.m. on Feb. 24 on ABC, and is expected to have many celebrity appearances including Mila Kunis and Anne Hathaway.
This year, the show will be hosted by Seth MacFarlane, who has starred in Family Guy and several movies, the most recent being Ted.
Sophomore Tori Hall commented, “I love [the Oscars] because of the funny skits the presenters do, and I love seeing the dresses.”
Although Hall anticipates a good show, some teenagers usually find the Academy Awards a little boring because the acceptance speeches tend to be long and the movies are more intended for an adult audience.
“Sometimes I watch the show with my parents but I usually get too bored and go do something else instead,” stated sophomore Brian Palma.
During the show, awards are given for various categories of movies that have premiered this year, and the winner is decided by a vote of members of the Academy, hence the Academy Awards.
This year is expected to be a close race for all three of the major categories: Best Picture, Best Actor, and Best Actress.
The nominees for Best Picture are Amour, Argo, Beasts of the Southern Wild, Django Unchained, Les Misérables, Life of Pi, Lincoln, Silver Linings Playbook, and Zero Dark Thirty.
For Best Actor, the nominees are Bradley Cooper, Daniel Day-Lewis, Hugh Jackman, Joaquin Phoenix, and Denzel Washington.
The Best Actress nominees are Jessica Chastain, Jennifer Lawrence, Emmanuelle Riva, Quvenzhané Wallis, and Naomi Watts.
“Seeing who wins Best Leading Actor and Actress is always the most exciting part, even though they always leave it for the end of the show,” said Hall.
