Carlmont’s Girls Varsity Water Polo team played Burlingame High School a third time Wednesday afternoon and emerged with an 8-3 victory.
Coach Bernice O’Connor said playing Burlingame twice before today helped the team win. The girls saw the strengths of Burlingame and effectively paired up for defense.
Lady Scots were defeated by Burlingame in the first league match between the two schools.
Emily Rudger said, “It was tough. It helped us bond as a team and gave us the determination to win.”
Carlmont started off well with a 2-0 lead in the first quarter.
Due to “poor defense in the second quarter,” as stated by O’Connor, Carlmont allowed Burlingame to attempt many goals, but goalie Sina Gomez stayed focused and deflected them. Burlingame came back late in the second quarter and tied the game at 2-2.
Junior Elise Dimick said, “Gomez played really well, which helped the team win.”
Lady Scots pulled ahead in the third quarter with a 5-2 lead. At the end of the third quarter Burlingame scored and brought up the score to 5-3.
O’Connor said that the team pulled together their defense in the third quarter, which contributed to their victory.
In the fourth quarter, junior Kristen Denney rushed back on offense once Gomez received the ball and scored a point for Carlmont. Denney executed a counter attack on Burlingame.
Dimick stated, “We had really good counter attacks, where there was no one between the player and the goal to play defense, so our goalie was able to pass the ball to that player.”
With a minute left in the game, Lauren Racciopi scored the last goal for Carlmont, ending the game at 8-3.
This win tied their record 4-4.
O’Connor plans on introducing new plays as well as working on fundamentals for the upcoming games that will determine their spot for CCS.
