Lady Scots won the first round of the Central Coast Section (CCS) against the Los Gatos Wildcats.
The doubles match played by Michelle Gaun and Rachel Chen continued into a tiebreaker where they came out victorious against their opponents. Their opponents made grunting sounds as they played which is unusual for players at the high school level.
Junior Pareesa Darafshi played a doubles match with partner Zoe Wildman and won with a score 6-1 and 6-4.
Darafshi talks about how unusual it is to watch a match with players making sounds. Darafshi said, “Grunting while playing is unusual for our age level, and is usually only done at a professional level, but it can also be necessary if you are a very good player.”
Guan and Chen were not thrown off by the sound effects during the course of their match. Chen said, “At first the sound scared us, but as we continued to play we got used to it and laughed about it.”
The matches all contributed to the overall score and the Lady Scots end up winning against their Wildcat opponents which means they will be playing Saratoga High School next.
Coach Amina Halsey said, “We will be playing Saratoga tomorrow, and they are seated number two but that does not affect us at all and we will play as strong as we played any other team.”
The next challenge the Lady Scots will face is round two of CCS against the Saratoga Falcons Nov. 12 which will determine if they will continue in the competition.
