California’s Standardized Testing and Reporting results were released Aug. 31, and once again Carlmont High School has improved its scores.
Carlmont saw a 1 percent increase of freshman students placing in the advanced category.
Principal Raul Zamora attributed the school’s success to “the school-wide collaboration of the annual Expository English Writing essay, increased focus on learning in the classroom, and counselors assigning students to correct classes.”
On a grander scale of events, the state of California has gone from having one in three students proficient or advanced to having more than one in two students proficient or advanced in less than 10 years.
Additionally, Carlmont is focused on making sure that every student succeeds academically, and have begun posting this year’s STAR results on students’ transcripts.
“Academic progress has been made in the English Language Learner department, and there also has been academic progress made among the minority groups,” added Zamora.
Zamora attributed the success to what he called a “safety net,” being put in place by the district to make sure that no students “fall through the cracks,” regardless of their economic or ethnic backgrounds.
Zamora also described the effect of placing the STAR results on transcripts has on a student’s college acceptance. “Some colleges ask for it (STAR test results) and some colleges don’t. It’s mainly an awareness for students. The district is currently reviewing whether or not to post STAR results on transcripts for next year.”
This school year, STAR testing begins April15.
