San Francisco 49ers fans around the Bay Area were disappointed at the results of Sunday’s game against the Seattle Seahawks, and many have been outraged by the post-game words of Seahawk’s cornerback Richard Sherman.

The 49ers fought a close game; the score separated by six at the end of the fourth quarter, one touchdown enough to bring them into the lead.

The last few seconds of the game ended with 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick throwing an interception tipped by Seahawks cornerback Sherman, leaving 49ers fans devastated. The final score remained 23-17, Seahawks in the lead.

After the game, Sherman said, “I’m the best corner in the game. When you try me with a sorry receiver like Crabtree, that’s the result you’re going to get.”

Many students at Carlmont were dejected to see their favorite football team eliminated.

Sophomore 49ers fan Sami Makaafi said, “I’m disappointed. Kaepernick should have done a better job; I guess he was too nervous. At least they gave the game their effort.”

In regards to Sherman’s words, Makaafi said, “At the end of the game I thought Sherman was really unprofessional, he was acting like a kid. He should grow up.”

Sophomore football fan Sam Levy had a slightly different view on Sherman’s post-game rant.

Levy said, “I think it was immature and unnecessary, but I think all the things he said were said in the heat of the moment. If I were in his place after a big victory like that, I think I would have done the same thing.”

Sophomore Seahawks fan Theo Chatman said, “I thought it was a tough loss for the red and gold, not being able to win in the last seconds of a NFC title game is a bad way to go out.”

Chatman said, “I thought what Sherman did was completely OK. He was in the heat of the moments after making a great play and spoke the truth.”

As the Super Bowl approaches, football fans that were rooting for the 49ers are looking for a side to support now that their preferred team is out of the running. Sherman has had a heavy influence over this choice within the Carlmont student body.

Junior Mariya Chichmarenko gave a summary of the feelings she was getting from her fellow classmates. Chichmarenko said, “I think a lot of people are angrier about what [Sherman] said after the game than the loss itself.” These feelings are causing a sway in support for the two Super Bowl teams.

Makaafi had no hesitation when asked what team he was rooting for. He said, “Thanks to Sherman, I’m rooting for the Broncos for sure now.”

Junior Elie Abinader shared Makaafi’s view. Abinader said, “It was really annoying when Sherman bragged about his play after the game. I’m definitely rooting for the Broncos in the Super Bowl.”

Sherman’s words are causing negative repercussions for the Seahawks, and many 49ers fans have shifted their support to the Broncos due to what numerous people are calling poor sportsmanship on Sherman’s part.

Only time will tell if Sherman can back up his words when the Super Bowl arrives.
