The Carlmont Scots JV flag football team defeated the Mills Vikings 13-0 on Wednesday, Oct. 30 in a dominating fashion, adding to their list of wins this season.
Both teams’ defenses in the first half of the game saw many changes of possession between the Scots and Vikings, but neither team scored.
In the second half, the Scots ramped up their game. Sophomore Chloe Taylor scored the first touchdown of the game, and shortly thereafter, freshman Callie Hernandez scored an extra point bringing the score to 7-0.
The Scots continued their attacks against the Vikings, resulting in another touchdown by sophomore Amberly Navarro near the end of the game and a final score of 13-0.
“Mills challenged us, but we stayed on it. We stayed disciplined, we had fun, we supported each other, and we had a great game out there. Mills definitely had a great game,” Hernandez said.
Although this is the first year that Carlmont has had a JV flag football team, they hold an impressive record of seven wins, zero losses, and two ties in the league.
“For a team that’s made up mostly of freshmen, this is a team that in the league hasn’t lost and got better every day. I think it creates a really good opportunity for us to have a good core going forward,” said the Scots head coach Oscar Fabic Cortez.
Although the Vikings lost, Mills head coach Erik Anderson was proud of his team’s effort during the game and the player’s determination throughout. Flag football is also a new sport for Mills, and Anderson expressed his thoughts on all schools having the sport.
“The girls are picking it up really well, which is surprising because they have never played flag football growing up. So their first experiences are now and they’re performing admirably,” Anderson said.
