The Carlmont JV flag football team ended their season on a high note, defeating the Sacred Heart Prep Gators 24-0 on Monday, Nov. 4.
The Scots set the tone early, stopping the Gators’ opening drive and establishing a quick rhythm on offense. However, both teams were stalled until sophomore receiver Amberly Navarro delivered the first score of the game, catching a 6-yard pass to cap off a 37-yard drive. The Scots’ lead only grew in the second half, as Navarro broke free for a 45-yard catch-and-run for her second touchdown of the game just seven minutes in.
“I think we accomplished more than what we planned,” Navarro said, reflecting on the team’s season. “Everybody set high goals and expectations, and I think we went we went beyond them.”
The Scots kept the momentum alive with a shutout defense that limited the Gators’ offense and set up multiple scoring opportunities, which sophomore running back Chloe Taylor took advantage of with an impressive 58-yard touchdown run, widening Carlmont’s lead. Just one play later, Navarro intercepted the Gators’ quarterback, setting up another scoring chance for the Scots that they capitalized on with a 33-yard drive that ended with freshman wide receiver Callie Hernandez hauling in a 13-yard pass with a minute and a half left in the game, completing the Scots’ 24-0 shutout victory.Â
“I’m so proud of the team. We’ve all improved so much since the start. We had some mistakes, but in the end, I think we had a great season,” Navarro said.
The program came into the season with high expectations, especially following the varsity team’s undefeated record the previous year. For many players, it was a new experience competing at this level. However, according to Hernandez, the Scots were more than up to the challenge.
“There was definitely pressure on us because varsity had such a strong season last year,” Hernandez said. “But those expectations pushed us, and I think everyone on the team lived up to them.”
The Scots’ defense was a consistent force throughout the season, allowing an average of 4.62 points per game, and their offense was explosive, outscoring opponents by an average of 16 points per game. The final victory over the Gators helped the Scots secure their tenth win and finish the season with an impressive 10-1-2 record.
“We have set the goal to become Central Coast Section champions next year and keep working towards the goal of being champions,” Hernandez said.
