Carlmont’s JV football lost to Sequoia 26-21 in a close game on Thursday night that slipped away in the final seconds.
The game was back and forth in the first quarter. With neither team gaining any ground, the first quarter ended 0-0.
The Ravens started off the second quarter with a pick-6 to score first. With the ball back in Carlmont’s hands, freshman quarterback Brody Zirelli passed the ball to Austin Sotto to gain 20 yards, getting the first down. The Scots were able to gain yardage but were unable to score going into the second half, leaving the score 7-0.
“We were working on attitude and mindset coming into the game, just focusing on kids doing their assignments, being happy, and wanting to finish this game out strong,” said Josh Hunter, Carlmont’s assistant coach.
Sequoia came out strong in the second half by getting another touchdown. After the Ravens missed the extra point, the Scots retaliated by gaining 40 yards off a run by freshman Maximiliano La Vrar. Freshman Dylan Sorenson was then able to jump up and catch the pass from Zirelli to score the Scot’s first points of the game.
After another Raven’s touchdown, Patrick Harvey-Guedes, a Carlmont freshman, was able to keep the momentum going by intercepting a pass and returning it for a touchdown, bringing the score to 20-14 going into the 4th quarter.
“I think we all did great throughout the entire season, we got better every single day,” Sorenson said
The fourth quarter started off with both teams not gaining anything. With the ball in the Scots’ possession and 18 yards to the endzone, Zirelli threw a pass caught by Sotto to even out the score. A kick by freshman Sebastian Aguilar gave Carlmont the lead with 55 seconds left. The Ravens did not lose sight of the end zone, gaining 48 yards the next play. Sequoia then scored a touchdown. With 42 seconds and 47 yards remaining, the Scots made their final drive downfield. While completing plays in the final seconds, the Scots would eventually turn the ball over on downs with nine seconds left in their season.
The Scots ended their season losing 26-21.
“Overall, it was a great game, I think everyone had fun and everyone was in it. I think what’s most important to remember about this is to come back harder next year,” Zirelli said.
The Scots finished their season with a 5-5 record. Many of the players agree there is much improvement that could be made before next season.
“We’re gonna fix our mental errors. It’s all this game is about,” Sorenson said.
Coaches agree that this season had its ups and downs, but when it came down to it, the Scots were able to push through any challenges that came their way.
“I think for the most part, we had a lot of effort, but it’s a rough ending,” said Patrick Harvey-Guedes, a tight end for the Scots. “I think we’ll come back better next year.”
