The Carlmont varsity girls flag football team overpowered the Mills Vikings 19-7, placing first in the Peninsula Athletic League after senior night on Oct. 30.
Both teams started slow, with no apparent signs of advantage for the Scots or Vikings until late in the first half when junior quarterback Lauren Greene ran the ball herself to get a few yards away from the endzone. The next play, she ran another quarterback sneak to score a touchdown. Freshman Miranda McCormick made a catch for the 1-point conversion, giving the Scots a 7-0 lead.
“I had some weaknesses, but I think my running was good. I was told I had over 100 rushing yards, so I definitely think my run game was good today,” Greene said.
The Scots were ahead, and as the Vikings attempted to tie the game, senior Euna Min got an interception and ran the ball for the touchdown with just under a minute left in the half.
The Scots led 13-0 in the second half. They looked to dominate further when sophomore Samantha Tow recovered a scramble play by throwing a precise pass to sophomore Emily Monteforte for the touchdown.
Although the Scots had a comfortable lead of 19-0, the Vikings didn’t give up, scoring a rushing touchdown by their quarterback and swiftly getting the ball back with an interception near the endzone. The audience and players on the bench were nervous as the game intensified until junior Bella Wilson got an interception in the endzone, essentially securing the cherishable win for the Scots.
This victory was a solid close to the season that solidified their first place position in the league and set the tone for next season.
“The highlight of the season is winning a championship, being undefeated 11-0 in PAL. I mean, that was our goal from the start, build and develop a championship-caliber program, and that means this year and next year and next year and next year,” said Scots head coach Oscar Fabic.
As flag football is a relatively new program at Carlmont, achieving the goal of building a championship program, as Fabic mentioned, is an outstanding accomplishment that was achieved by the participation of the players and Carlmont students.
“There are a lot of players that we could talk so much about. The whole team, from top to bottom, we’re proud of them and lucky to have them,” Fabic said.
The Scots had a promising season with a deep roster that hopes to continue the team’s legacy next season, facing worthy opponents, including the Vikings, who seek redemption.
“We didn’t capitalize on their pick, and they capitalized on theirs. We’ll get them next year,” said Vikings head coach Erik Anderson.
