Cartoon: Navy negligence

Former Navy veteran Gilbert Wyand was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia, a cancer caused by radiation exposure, at age 57. Despite Wyand’s initial confusion, a Navy report revealed that radioactive material had been contaminating the shipyard where he lived and worked in the late 1980s. Not only did this report indicate that the shipyard had been infected with radium-226 and strontium-90 for decades, but the Navy had made no effort to contact Wyand or others about this potential exposure. Now, tens of thousands of veterans are at risk and remain unaware of their potential exposure to radioactive material due to the Navy’s lack of transparency and communication. (Skylin Lui)
