A place that never fails to disappoint my sweet tooth: Sweet Moment. Located in downtown San Mateo, I discovered this gem through a very close friend. If you're looking for a refreshing and fruity tea, this copycat recipe of their Super Mango Peach Tea is here to satisfy.

A close friend of mine absolutely loves this boba shop in downtown San Mateo. Whenever we're out, a sweet treat is mandatory, and it's 99% of the time from Sweet Moment. Even during long dress rehearsals...

Starbucks adds new flavors like ube and toasted coconut to its spring 2026 menu. However, like many big corporations, they fail to acknowledge the cultural roots of ube. Ube, a purple yam native to the Philippines, is an ingredient that deserves proper recognition.

With Starbucks releasing its new ube toasted coconut drinks for spring, many influencers online have been raving about its flavor and color. However, again, someone else's culture has been used without...

As the months get warmer, I find myself leaning towards iced drinks and smoothies to cool off. Since Foxtrot is only located in Dallas and Chicago, I wanted to share a recreation of their Coffee Date Smoothie. This smoothie combines some of my favorite ingredients to create a refreshing treat.

I have never been fond of hot weather. I believe it's better to be cold rather than hot, because you can always put on more layers, but you can only take off so much. My first time in Texas was surprisingly...

The rise of "New-Style" Chinese tea beverages have reached the Bay Area. Brands like Molly Tea and HeyTea emphasize tea quality and experience, which have customers willing to wait and splurge on their beverages.

From home digest: Molly Tea edition

Audrey Navasca, Staff Writer March 10, 2026

The first time I discovered Molly Tea was on a lunch date with my friend. As a Downtown San Mateo frequenter, I had heard that a new boba place had opened and wanted to give it a try. A drizzly December...

It's a race against time, and I don't think I can beat it. With graduation coming soon, I feel like I have to say goodbye to my childhood. What comes next? Who will I be?

Growing pains: Learning how to say goodbye

Audrey Navasca, Staff Writer March 6, 2026

When I was a kid, all I wanted to do was grow up. I felt like I was too young for my friends at church, because although I was included in all their games, I knew I wasn't their equal. I was simply...

On my table lie all kinds of stationery. "I'll wait to use this," is what I would tell myself whenever I got new stationery. The "perfect moment" I saved my pens, stickers, and pretty paper for never came though. The myth of perfect timing kept me from trying them, as well as new things.

Growing pains: What are you waiting for?

Audrey Navasca, Staff Writer February 7, 2026

When I was younger, one of the ways my mom would treat me was by taking me to the "Hello Kitty Store" — which was actually called the Sanrio Store at Hillsdale Shopping Center. The name was used interchangeably,...

On Saturday mornings, the smell of garlic fried rice, sunny side up eggs, and sweet spam and longganisa fill my house. While physical touch, acts of service, words of affirmation, receiving gifts, and quality time are the five love languages, I've come to realize that food is the sixth.

Growing pains: Food is the sixth love language

Audrey Navasca, Staff Writer January 22, 2026

There are five love languages, according to Gary Chapman. However, displays of love and affection in my house felt deeper when it came in the form of what I believe to be the sixth love language – food.  I...

Outgrowing friendships is a natural part of growing up, but that doesn't mean it's easy. Sometimes we find ourselves chasing who we used to be instead of accepting change.

Growing pains: Outgrowing friendships

Audrey Navasca, Staff Writer January 14, 2026

In elementary school, my best friend and I made a promise that we would stay friends even until high school. Well, I'm in my second semester of senior year, and that friend is nowhere to be found. Nine-year-old...

As the season changes, fall brings forth all kinds of overconsumption. The pumpkin spice flavor is associated with beverages and food items, leading people to want to buy it excessively before it's gone. Spirit Halloween is only open during the fall months, but produces waste as costumes are tossed after a single use. Social media promotes the latest fall fashion trends, but leads people to believe they need to buy more clothing than necessary.

Falling into the season of overconsumption

Audrey Navasca, Staff Writer November 2, 2025

Pumpkin spice, fall fashion trends, and Spirit Halloween all come together as the perfect breeding grounds for the October overconsumption season. According to the National Retail Federation (NRF),...

Kaizen & Coffee's specialty menu features unique combinations like a caramel miso latte and a hot mission mocha, a spicy twist on a regular mocha. The menu changes daily and includes many additional seasonal drinks.

Review: Kaizen & Coffee

Audrey Navasca, Staff Writer October 15, 2025

As I stepped through the glass door of Kaizen & Coffee, I was greeted by the buzzing of chattering friends, quiet laughter, and the hum of coffee machines. The small, sleek, and black painted exterior...

Digital and disposable cameras have become increasingly popular over the past few years, evoking the "Y2K" style. The grain and imperfections of each image give users a nostalgic feeling. For some, they are an alternative to phone screens, but for others, they are more sentimental.

The art of being sentimental

Audrey Navasca, Staff Writer May 28, 2025

With the school year coming to a close, the future beyond high school continues to become a closer and closer reality. The senior class will soon become alums, and the junior class will only have two semesters...

The prices of beverages such as coffee and boba have gone up over the past few years. Factors such as better quality ingredients, inflation, and social media have all played a part in the high prices.

In a social media-centered world, your favorite cafes and boba shops are no exception to the effects of online communities. According to Eater LA, social media has made these places more focused on aesthetics...

The F hall floods with students as the bell rings. Students surround one another from every direction, but students with the F-U walk have to pick up the pace in order to make it to their next class on time.

Students curse the F-U walk

Audrey Navasca, Staff Writer November 30, 2023

Sweat, stress, and speed walking. About a quarter-mile long trek, every year, students get assigned the infamous F-U walk from F hall to U hall or vice versa. Some teachers have realized that the...
