Cartoon: Byte-sized workforce

A consistent trend from 2022 to 2024 is seen in tech companies cutting off workers, leaving many unemployed. Only four months into this year, more than 74,000 employees have been laid off by more than 260 companies. Large companies such as Google, Apple, and Amazon plan to make for reasons including the inflation of hiring during the pandemic and the desire to utilize A.I. as a cheaper alternative. However, with so many left unemployed, the demand for jobs only becomes more competitive, leaving many unable to support themselves. Going forward, major tech companies should provide transparent communication and compensation for workers to set off on the right foot. (Skylin Lui)
