US national security is at risk as discoveries about strange objects in the sky linked with China are made. Concern grows about China’s use of a surveillance balloon to intercept private communications from the US, and was shot down upon discovery. As this all goes down, there is still prevalent use of the Chinese-owned social media app, Tik Tok. In December of 2022, FBI Director Christopher Wray gave a public warning against the use of the site due to its privacy and data collection policies, which have the potential to make significant personal information accessible to the Chinese government. The dangers of TikTok, a popular service with 80 million US users, are less likely to draw the public’s attention compared to the mysterious and fear-evoking nature of a Chinese spy balloon.
