Cartoon: Divestment protests on campus

Amidst the war on Gaza, protests supporting Palestine in the conflict over the Gaza Strip have spread to college campuses across the US. The students have demanded that their colleges cut off their support for companies that support Israel, including Google and Airbnb, as well as divest their tuition money from arms manufacturers. While a majority of the protests remain peaceful, some protestors have breached campus buildings, and there is a minority that has voiced harm to Zionists, making Jewish and pro-Israel students feel unsafe. Schools such as Columbia University, where most of the action occurs, are faced with how to respond. Currently, student suspensions and arrests have been their answer. While it’s essential that colleges recognize their students’ right to free speech, colleges must also create a safe space for their students. (Keira Sarmiento)
