We all know the story: the SATs are unfair. Standardized testing gives an advantage to well-off families who can afford the best tutors for their children. Due to this disparity, colleges have turned to test-optional policies, and more and more students are choosing to opt out of submitting test scores. However, new studies show that SAT scores do not hurt diversity. For some, the SAT is a crucial stepping stone out of poverty and into the world of higher education. The SAT shows trends in intelligence and hard work, helping predict where students success in college. The SAT is less about how much money you spend and more a reflection of your effort and character and should remain a factor in the college selection process.

The House of Representatives has voted to ban social media app Tiktok from the United States: a controversial decision that caused uproar among the younger generations and somehow united the Democrats and Republicans. The ban offers Tiktoks Chinese owner, Bytedance, to either sell the app or have it banned.

A familiar scene plays out: Donald Trump and Joe Biden stand across the stage from each other, vying for the title of president in front of an audience of more than 300 million Americans. They hurl insults of past mistakes at each other. Its a tight race. Only, its not 2020 anymore: four years later, 77-year-old Trump and 81-year-old Biden are back at it again. With Republican candidate Nikki Haley dropping out of the race, Americans will be forced to choose between two unappealing (polls say) candidates yet again. American voters need to do their part by stepping up to the polls and making a change. Otherwise, well find ourselves in this situation once again.

As Mahomes threw the game-winning point at the Superbowl, Israel launched an attack on Gazas biggest and last camp for humanitarian aid. As Usher took the stage at halftime, children in Ethiopia and Sudan starved to death. As Americans stayed riveted to their screens on Sunday night, the world continues to churn on: mass shootings occur, global warming still threatens species extinction, and Ukraine loses ground against Russias invasion. While football and other pastimes may be entertaining, we cannot let ourselves be blindsided by the travesties occurring around the world.

On Nov. 30, 2021, a 15-year-old boy shot and killed four of his classmates in Oxford Township, Michigan. Two years later, his mother Jennifer Crumbley has been found guilty on charges of involuntary manslaughter and sentenced to 15 years in prison. She repeatedly ignored her sons pleas for help, brushing off concerning texts, drawings of guns, and phrases scribbled in notebooks like blood everywhere. The pistol that he used to kill four peers and injure 7 more was gifted by his parents. Parents should be held more accountable for their childrens actions: it is their job to protect them, raise them, and help them when in need. Above all, its the job of parents to keep their children from dangering themselves and others.

On December 16th, three Isreali hostages waving a white flag were mistakenly shot by Isreals forces, killing them. Since then, there has been an outpour of support and reporting on the three mens lives and families. However, this coverage sharply contrasts with the lack of coverage on Palestinian victims - who have no way of communicating with the outside world and humanizing their losses.

The Texas Supreme court pulled the brakes on a lower court allowing an abortion to a woman with a fetus with fatal conditions. Texas has strict abortion laws and a statewide ban on abortion, presenting scenarios like these where the mother and childs life may be in danger. For the sake of human life, abortion should be legal nationwide.

Many people may want to donate to support humanitarian aid in Gaza in the ongoing Isreal-Hamas war but do not have the funds. Tiktok creators are providing a new way to help, by monetizing their videos and putting that money towards aid. A group of radical Republicans voted their speaker Kevin McCarthy out of the house on October 3rd. The vote out was a cumulation of debates between McCarthy and eight far-right Republicans who didnt agree with his decisions. Them, and a unanimous front of Democrats, ousted the Speaker. This makes it the first time a speaker has been voted out of the house, no less by his own party. McCarthy stated that he would not be running again, leaving Republican Patrick McHenry as a temporary speaker.

Aryna Sabalenka, a world renowned tennis player who deftly hit her way into the second week of the French open, refused to attend the post-match press conference for mental health reasons. This draws a parallel between Naomi Osakas refusal to attend last year for the same reasons, raising a new question of mental health in athletes. Tournaments should put their athletes health first, instead of pushing through and making mandatory uncomfortable questions.

Graduation is nearing, and seniors are saying goodbye to Carlmont for the last time. Its important to make strong memories to hold onto in your high school years: they only come once.

Millions of people in Mexico have been ordered to evacuate as Mt. Popocatépetl rains ash across the country. 25 million people live in the volcanos vicinity, with it being 45 miles away from the bustling Mexico city. If it erupts, 3 million people living in its shadow could be killed, and for cities like Mexico city, ash fall would damage the health of everyone living there.

Historically the World Cup pay gap has been extremely unfair, with women receiving less than a third of the men. Last May, the US Soccer Federation announced that they would pool the money from world cup winnings between the men and womens teams and split them evenly. With the Womens World Cup coming up in the summer, the equal pay for the US teams is a big step for gender equality in sports.

Paris has been burning. President Emmanuel Macron passed a law to raise the national retirement age from 62 to 64, in response to the cost of living and inflation, but the people of Paris are not happy about it. Over the past two weeks, protests have been erupting across the city. Garbage workers went on strike and piles of it now line the streets, some of it set on fire. The President has yet to take back the reform.
