Behind The Veil Ep. 1: The ketogenic diet

For the first episode of Behind The Veil, we will cover the ketogenic diet. Join host Kiera Moore and guest Dr. Eric Westman, an internal medicine doctor and medical weight management specialist at Duke University Health in North Carolina, as they discuss this diet.

There are two main forms of the ketogenic diet, one designed for epileptic children and another for weight loss in obese or type two diabetic patients. The ketogenic diet works by restricting carbs to allow your body to enter a state of ketosis. With those low carbohydrate levels, the fats on your body and the fats you eat can be converted into ketones for energy. Specifically, the restriction of carbohydrates lowers your blood sugar and insulin levels and puts you in that metabolic state of ketosis.

Many different rumors are going around about this diet, including the various forms of ketogenic diets, whether or not it is a safe diet, and in general, what’s best for your health. Dr. Eric Westman helps answer these questions and provides factual information to help us better understand.
