Some teachers don’t allow students to leave at the beginning of passing periods, repeating the mantra, “The bell does not dismiss you, I do.” But the major flaw in Carlmont’s tardiness policies is that it assumes that the bell reigns supreme.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has predicted that this season will be one of the hardest-hitting hurricanes in the US. 17 to 25 storms are predicted, with seven of the being hurricanes and at least four predicted to cause major damages. This is in part due to rising ocean temperatures and global warming - we need to act fast to stop future situations like this happening.

California may have just solved renewable energy's biggest drawback. While solar power is an excellent method of combating climate change by providing electricity without the release of fossil fuels, there has remained one problem: the sun doesn't shine all day. However, California has now installed giant batteries to store the energy for later. More states should follow California's example in helping save the planet.

On May 3rd, counterprotests at the University of California Los Angeles attacked a Palestinian encampment on the campus. Unprovoked, they used sticks, chemical sprays, and fireworks as weapons against the students. Police were called, but did nothing to stop the violence for hours. This, and other similar scenes, have been playing out across the country in response to the Isreal-Hamas war and the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. C0llege students should be able to continue to demonstrate their support for what they believe in safely and peacefully.

When you go in for an x-ray or download a new app that tracks your sleep cycle or calories, you may accept that those apps can see your data. However, what you didn't know is that your brain may be up for sale too - the data from electrical signals controlling your every thought and action can be bought. Colorado's new bill aims to stop this. They offer proper privacy protections from big tech companies aiming to use biological and neural data, something all states should follow suit in.

We all know the story: the SATs are unfair. Standardized testing gives an advantage to well-off families who can afford the best tutors for their children. Due to this disparity, colleges have turned to test-optional policies, and more and more students are choosing to opt out of submitting test scores. However, new studies show that SAT scores do not hurt diversity. For some, the SAT is a crucial stepping stone out of poverty and into the world of higher education. The SAT shows trends in intelligence and hard work, helping predict where students' success in college. The SAT is less about how much money you spend and more a reflection of your effort and character and should remain a factor in the college selection process.

The House of Representatives has voted to ban social media app Tiktok from the United States: a controversial decision that caused uproar among the younger generations and somehow united the Democrats and Republicans. The ban offers Tiktok's Chinese owner, Bytedance, to either sell the app or have it banned.

A familiar scene plays out: Donald Trump and Joe Biden stand across the stage from each other, vying for the title of president in front of an audience of more than 300 million Americans. They hurl insults of past mistakes at each other. It's a tight race. Only, it's not 2020 anymore: four years later, 77-year-old Trump and 81-year-old Biden are back at it again. With Republican candidate Nikki Haley dropping out of the race, Americans will be forced to choose between two unappealing (polls say) candidates yet again. American voters need to do their part by stepping up to the polls and making a change. Otherwise, we'll find ourselves in this situation once again.

As Mahomes threw the game-winning point at the Superbowl, Israel launched an attack on Gaza's biggest and last camp for humanitarian aid. As Usher took the stage at halftime, children in Ethiopia and Sudan starved to death. As Americans stayed riveted to their screens on Sunday night, the world continues to churn on: mass shootings occur, global warming still threatens species extinction, and Ukraine loses ground against Russia's invasion. While football and other pastimes may be entertaining, we cannot let ourselves be blindsided by the travesties occurring around the world.

On Nov. 30, 2021, a 15-year-old boy shot and killed four of his classmates in Oxford Township, Michigan. Two years later, his mother Jennifer Crumbley has been found guilty on charges of involuntary manslaughter and sentenced to 15 years in prison. She repeatedly ignored her son's pleas for help, brushing off concerning texts, drawings of guns, and phrases scribbled in notebooks like "blood everywhere." The pistol that he used to kill four peers and injure 7 more was gifted by his parents. Parents should be held more accountable for their children's actions: it is their job to protect them, raise them, and help them when in need. Above all, it's the job of parents to keep their children from dangering themselves and others.

Once 30 days is up, the homeless of New York are once again turned to the streets and have to take a number to find a place to sleep again. The numbers of people without proper shelter at night are now up to the 1700s.

Mean Girls, the beloved 2000s coming-of-age film, portrays the complex social order of high school girls. Now, twenty years later, the iconic movie has inspired a remake. Although it has immediately faced backlash over changes in storyline, costumes, and castings, the new movie holds constant the ideas of friendship in girlhood, kindness, and staying true to oneself.

On December 16th, three Isreali hostages waving a white flag were mistakenly shot by Isreal's forces, killing them. Since then, there has been an outpour of support and reporting on the three men's lives and families. However, this coverage sharply contrasts with the lack of coverage on Palestinian victims - who have no way of communicating with the outside world and humanizing their losses.

Texas has strict abortion laws and a statewide ban on abortion, presenting scenarios like these where the mother and child's life may be in danger. OpenAI was started as a non-profit to regulate AI advancements and ensure that we stayed safe with our usage. It's object was to "keep in humanity's best interests," and it did this by keeping it nonprofit which was controlled by an executive board, and funding themselves from for-profit. On November 17th, the board fired the CEO Sam Altman. In response, 90% of employees threatened to quit their job unless he was reinstated and the board resigned. Altman regained his position.
